In the crowded refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar, life is a constant struggle for survival in different aspects. For a small group of transgender Rohingya, these struggles are compounded by discrimination, humiliation, and a desperate fight for acceptance. Their journey, marred by hardship and resilience, reflects the broader challenges faced by many marginalized groups in crisis zones. This photo essay captures their lives, dreams, and the harsh realities they face daily.

At a wedding celebration in Cox’s Bazar, transgender dancers perform with grace and passion. These moments offer brief respite from their daily struggles, allowing them to earn a little money. The joy in their expressions contrasts sharply with the challenges they face once the music stops.

Over twenty transgender Rohingya have moved to Bhasan Char, seeking a better life away from the threats of non-state actors in Cox’s Bazar. The journey, fraught with uncertainty, is a testament to their resilience and determination to find peace and safety.

In Bhasan Char, the transgender community spends most of their time together. The lack of events and celebrations means fewer opportunities to dance and earn. Instead, some resort to begging from house to house, a stark contrast to their previous lives.

Back in Myanmar, these transgender individuals also faced discrimination and had limited opportunities. Yet, they found ways to participate in celebrations, dancing with singers to earn enough for their daily needs. Their current struggles in Bhasan Char are a painful reminder of their past.

Despite receiving some support from the Bandhu Foundation, it has not been enough to ensure their safety and well-being in Bhasan Char. The lack of adequate support leaves them vulnerable and in constant danger.

Their message to those in power is clear: they seek the chance to live peacefully and be treated with dignity, free from the constant humiliation and danger they face. The longing for a society that accepts them, either in the camps or in Bhasan Char, remains unfulfilled.
